New rules for selling bladed items on eBay UK are now in force. Starting 10 March 2025, stricter rules mean sellers must verify buyer ages, use approved delivery services, and tighten up their listings. Here’s what you need to know to stay compliant, and keep your sales sharp. So, let’s break down how to sell blade items on eBay marketplace.
New Selling Requirements from 10 March 2025
To enhance safety and ensure compliance with UK laws, eBay UK has introduced stricter regulations for selling bladed items. These measures are designed to prevent underage purchases and ensure responsible sales practices.

Mandatory Age Verification at Delivery
Thus, all sellers of bladed items must implement age verification both at the point of sale and upon delivery. This dual verification process ensures that only individuals aged 18 or older can purchase and receive such items.
Key requirements:
- Age verification at checkout: Buyers must confirm their age during the purchase process.
- Age-verified delivery services: Sellers are required to use delivery services that offer age verification upon receipt. Currently, UPS provides an “Adult Signature Required” service, and Royal Mail offers Tracked 24 and Tracked 48 services with age verification options.
- Removal of non-compliant delivery options: Any delivery methods that do not support age verification, including local collection or delivery to parcel lockers, must be removed from listings.
Proper Packaging and Labelling
To ensure safety during transit and compliance with regulations, bladed items must be packaged and labelled appropriately.
Packaging guidelines:
- Secure packaging: Items should be packaged securely to prevent any movement or damage during transit.
- Clear labelling: Parcels must be clearly labelled to indicate that they contain bladed items and that age verification is required upon delivery.
- Carrier-specific requirements: Be aware that different carriers may have specific packaging and labelling requirements. It’s essential to consult with the chosen delivery service to ensure compliance.
UK-Based Inventory
All bladed items listed for sale must be physically located within the UK. This requirement ensures that sellers can utilize UK-based delivery services that offer age verification and comply with domestic regulations.
Important notes:
- No international shipping: Bladed items cannot be shipped from or to international locations.
- Domestic delivery only: Sellers must ensure that all bladed items are dispatched from within the UK and delivered to UK addresses.

Which Items Are Affected?

Collectables
If you’re selling knives or bladed items in the Collectables > Knives & Blades category on eBay UK, it’s essential to understand the new rules coming into force on 10 March 2025. This category is intended for collectable and historical blades, and includes subcategories such as:
- Collectable folding knives: Pocket-sized knives designed to fold into the handle.
- Collectable fixed blade knives: Blades permanently fixed into the handle, often used for display or historical purposes.
- Collectable pocket knives: Compact knives with multiple small blades or tools.
- Vintage knives: Older, often antique knives sought by collectors.
- Knife blades and parts: Individual blades, unfinished blades, or components for collectable knives.
- Military knives (where permitted): Military-issue knives, subject to additional restrictions under eBay’s Prohibited and Restricted Items Policy.
Blades sold under this category must clearly be presented as collectable, historical, or utilitarian in nature.
Examples of acceptable listings:
- “Vintage Sheffield Folding Knife, 1950s – Collectable Item”;
- “Military Surplus Survival Knife – 1970s Collectable, For Display Only”;
- “Hand-Forged Fixed Blade Knife, Artisan Craft – Collectable Piece”.
Home, Furniture & DIY
Another category impacted by the new bladed item rules is Home, Furniture & DIY > DIY Tools & Workshop Equipment > Hand Tools. This category covers a range of practical tools used in construction, repairs, and hobbies, many of which involve sharp blades.
Common items listed here:
- Utility knives / box cutters: Standard cutting tools for packaging, flooring, and general tasks.
- Craft knives: Precision tools used in arts, crafts, and light DIY work.
- Chisels: Bladed hand tools for woodworking and masonry (e.g., woodworking chisels).
- Replacement blades: Spare blades for craft knives, utility knives, and chisels.
Examples of acceptable listings:
- “Heavy Duty Box Cutter Knife – Ideal for Packaging & DIY, Age-Restricted”;
- “Precision Craft Knife Set with Spare Blades – DIY Hobby Tools (18+ Delivery Required)”;
- “Woodworking Chisel Set – Professional Grade, UK Stock”.
Sporting Goods
The Sporting Goods > Camping & Hiking > Camping Tools category covers a range of outdoor equipment, but many items listed here involve blades.
Common items listed here:
- Survival knives: Essential tools for outdoor survival, typically including fixed or folding blades.
- Camping axes or machetes: Used for chopping wood or clearing brush; permitted if they meet eBay’s safety standards.
- Multi-tools with fold-out blades: Versatile tools (like Leatherman-style devices) that often feature small knives alongside other functions.
If the item has any bladed element, even a small fold-out knife on a multi-tool, it must comply with the new age-verification and packaging rules.
Examples of acceptable listings:
- “Camping Survival Knife – Fixed Blade, Outdoor Use Only (Age-Restricted Delivery)”;
- “Heavy Duty Camping Axe – Bushcraft & Outdoor Survival Tool”;
- “Leatherman-Style Multi-Tool with Fold-Out Knife – Essential Camping Gear (18+)”.
Health & Beauty
The Health & Beauty > Shaving & Hair Removal > Razors & Blades category is another area affected by the new bladed item rules on eBay UK.
Common items listed here:
- Safety razors: Traditional razors with a protective guard over the blade.
- Razor blade cartridges: Multi-blade replacement heads for modern shaving systems.
- Cut-throat/straight razors: Open-blade razors, often used by barbers or collectors.
Some shaving items, especially straight razors or any open-blade tools, may require age verification because they are classified as dangerous or collectible bladed items.
Examples of acceptable listings:
- “Traditional Cut-Throat Straight Razor – Barber-Grade Shaving Tool (Age-Restricted Delivery)”;
- “Safety Razor with 5 Replacement Blades – Classic Wet Shaving Kit”;
- “Pack of 10 Razor Blade Cartridges – Compatible with XYZ Shaving System”.
7 Tips for Compliant Listings
Success on eBay UK starts with fully compliant listings. Follow these essential tips to meet the new bladed item rules and keep your sales running smoothly.
#1: Choose the Correct Category
- Always list your item in the most appropriate and recognised category.
- Use only permitted paths like:
- Collectables > Knives & Blades;
- Home, Furniture & DIY > DIY Tools & Workshop Equipment > Hand Tools;
- Sporting Goods > Camping & Hiking > Camping Tools;
- Health & Beauty > Shaving & Hair Removal > Razors & Blades.
- Misclassification (e.g., listing a survival knife under general sporting goods) can lead to automatic removal.

#2: Provide Clear and Accurate Descriptions
- Describe the item factually: focus on materials, size, historical significance (for collectables), or intended lawful use (for tools).
- Avoid language that could glamorize violence or misuse e.g., do not describe knives as “combat-ready” or “perfect for self-defence.”
- If the item is vintage, antique, or collectable, make that clear in the title and description.
Example:
Correct: “Vintage 1970s Folding Knife – Collectable Outdoor Gear”
Wrong: “Deadly Combat Folding Knife – Ultimate Survival Weapon”
#3: Highlight the Age Verification Requirement
- State in your listing that buyers must be over 18 and age verification will be conducted at delivery.
- Example phrasing to include: “Please note: This item is age-restricted. Buyers must be 18 or older and will need to present a valid ID upon delivery.”
#4: Use Only Approved Delivery Services
- Offer only shipping options that include age-verified delivery, such as:
- UPS (Adult Signature Required);
- Royal Mail (Tracked 24/48 with Age Verification).
- Remove any unsupported delivery methods like:
- Click & Collect;
- In-store pickup;
- Delivery to lockers or parcel shops.

M2E Pro enables you to define shipping policies for your listings. Ensure that you select shipping services that offer age-verified delivery. If the correct service isn’t used, eBay will return errors for your listings.

#5: Prepare Proper Packaging
- Package all bladed items securely to avoid accidents during shipping.
- Use sturdy, tamper-proof packaging and label parcels according to courier requirements (e.g., “Contains Sharp Item – Age Verification Required“).
#6: Keep Inventory Within the UK
- Only list bladed items that are stored and dispatched from the UK.
- Do not offer international shipping or allow international buyers to purchase these items.
#7: Regularly Review eBay Policies
- eBay’s rules may evolve after March 2025. Set a reminder to check eBay’s Bladed Items Selling Policy every few months.
- Stay updated to avoid accidental non-compliance.
FAQs
Q1: Can I still sell collectable knives to international buyers?
No, you cannot.
Starting from 10 March 2025, all bladed items listed on eBay UK, including collectible knives, must be stored and shipped within the UK only. International shipping is not allowed for these items, even if they are vintage, collectable, or sold for display purposes.
This ensures that all deliveries go through approved UK couriers offering mandatory age verification at the point of delivery, which is a legal requirement under the updated policies.
Q2: Do all camping tools require age verification?
Not all camping tools – but any tool that includes a bladed element does.
If the camping item you’re selling contains a blade (for example, a survival knife, camping axe, machete, or a multi-tool with a fold-out knife), you must follow the age-verification rules.
Camping gear without blades, like tents, sleeping bags, or cookware, does not require age verification.
Q3: What happens if I don’t comply?
If you fail to meet eBay’s new requirements for selling bladed items after 10 March 2025, your listings may be removed without warning, and your account could face selling restrictions or even suspension.
Non-compliance includes missing age verification, incorrect category selection, using unapproved delivery services, or offering international shipping for bladed items.
eBay actively monitors listings to ensure sellers follow the rules, and repeated violations may permanently impact your ability to sell on the platform.
Q4: I only sell second-hand items. Do the new rules still apply to me?
Yes, the new requirements apply to all bladed items sold in the UK, whether new or second-hand.
Q5: What if the buyer can’t prove their age when the item arrives?
If the buyer cannot show valid ID at the time of delivery, the courier will refuse to hand over the item. The package’s next steps, whether it’s returned or held, will follow the courier’s own procedures, so it’s best to check directly with the delivery service for details.

It isn’t just knives – they apply the policy to saws, too. This means you cannot sell a 30Kg bench mounted saw if it takes blades, even if there is no blade in it. You also cannot do home collection, it HAS to be a courier – this effectively means you can’t sell tools that are too heavy for standard couriers. Except when you can – the policy seems to be applies in a very hap hazard way, there are lots of items which breach the policy listed on eBay, other than the algorithms pick up. Not easy to aee why some and not others…
This is likely caused by eBay’s automated detection. Have you tried contacting eBay support for clarification or a manual review?
