EPREL and Energy Efficiency Data on eBay Listings in 2026

Meet eBay EU energy label rules with EPREL. Learn how to find the EPREL number and add it in M2E Pro for new and existing listings.

In the Q4 2025 eBay Developers Program newsletter (October to December 2025), eBay announced a new EPREL Registration Number aspect that lets eBay automatically pull Energy Efficiency (EEK) content for supported categories. eBay also requires energy efficiency information for certain products listed to buyers in the EU, UK, and Switzerland, and EPREL is one way to provide the label and product data sheet on the listing.

What Is EPREL: Quick Guide

EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling) is the EU’s public database for products that must have an EU energy label. Each product model in EPREL is assigned a unique registration number, which is a numeric code (up to 19 digits) with no letters or special characters. This EPREL number links to the product’s official energy label data (such as its efficiency class, performance metrics, and the product information sheet).

What Data EPREL Contains

EPREL is filled in by the supplier (manufacturer or importer), not by the marketplace seller. EPREL has two parts:

Public database (what buyers and marketplaces can use):

  • Supplier name/trademark and contact details
  • Model identifier
  • Energy label (electronic format)
  • Energy efficiency class(es) and other label parameters
  • Product information sheet parameters

Compliance database (for enforcement):

  • Model identifiers for equivalent models already placed on the market
  • Technical documentation required by the regulation

EPREL lets suppliers generate the official energy label from the registered data. Consumers and marketplaces can access and compare key performance information using EPREL data.

Which Products Require EPREL

EU energy labelling rules apply to specific product groups. If your product is in scope, the manufacturer registers the model in EPREL and publishes the official label data there. As a seller, you may need to provide energy efficiency information on eBay listings that target regulated markets.

Welding Equipment

  • Cooking (Domestic Ovens, Range Hoods, Hobs)
  •  Cleaning and Drying (Dishwashers, Washing Machines, Washer Dryers, Tumble Dryers, Vacuum Cleaners)
  • Refrigeration (Fridges and Freezers, Commercial Refrigerators, Professional Refrigerated Storage Cabinets)
  • Heating, Cooling and Ventilation (Air Conditioners and Comfort Fans, Local Space Heaters, Ventilation Units, Solid Fuel Boilers, Space Heaters, Water Heaters, Air Heating and Cooling Products)
  • Electronic Products (Electronic Displays, Smartphones and Tablets, Computers, External Power Supplies, Servers and Data Storage Products, Game Consoles)
  • Light Sources
  • Tyres
  • Circulators
  • Electric Motors
  • Industrial Fans
  • Power Transformers
  • Water Pumps

Why EPREL and Energy Labels Matter for Sellers in 2026

f you sell regulated products to EU buyers, energy label data is not optional. It is a compliance requirement. Marketplaces like eBay enforce these rules at the listing level. If your listing is missing required energy information, you can get listing errors, reduced visibility, or removal, depending on the category and market.

2026 matters because EU energy labelling rules keep changing. The EU continues to expand and refine which product groups are regulated and what information must appear on product pages. The European Commission is also revising ecodesign and energy labelling requirements for some product groups, including work on updated rules for space heaters and water heaters (with a consultation running from late 2025 into early 2026).

These updates exist to support EU energy and climate goals. Energy labels make energy performance visible and comparable at the point of purchase. That helps buyers choose more efficient models. When labels and rules are updated, marketplaces update their listing requirements too.

For sellers, the Impact is Practical and Predictable

  • New or updated label formats. A product group can move to a revised label design or a revised rating scale. If you reuse old label files or outdated rating values, your listing can become non-compliant.
  • More required fields in listings. When EU requirements change, marketplaces adjust listing fields. You may see new item specifics or new document requirements for the same category.
  • More product groups in scope over time. The Commission’s regulated product list grows and gets refined. A category that did not require energy information before can become regulated, or enforcement can expand to more subcategories.
  • Stricter marketplace enforcement. Marketplaces must comply too, so they tighten validation. If your listing is missing required energy data for an in-scope product, you are more likely to see errors, reduced visibility, or removal.

The seller’s takeaway is simple: expect energy labelling compliance to apply to more categories over time, and expect marketplaces to enforce it more strictly.

How to Provide EPREL for eBay Listings

If you sell in or ship to the EU, Northern Ireland, or Switzerland, eBay may require Energy Efficiency (EEK) information for regulated categories such as appliances, smartphones, tablets, and tyres. With a valid EPREL registration number, eBay can pull the label and product data sheet automatically. Support depends on the specific leaf category.

You can add EPREL to your eBay listings in 3 workflows:

  • Manual input of all details. You can upload the energy label image and product information sheet PDF for the item, and fill in its energy efficiency class (rating) and scale (range) as item specifics. This method ensures you provide the exact documents and values up front. (In eBay’s listing flow, this is done in the Item disclosures section by toggling “Add energy efficiency documentation” and uploading the files.)
  • Automatic retrieval via EPREL. Alternatively, eBay allows you to simply provide an EPREL Registration Number (or other unique product ID like Brand/MPN/EAN) for the item. If a valid EPREL number is given, eBay’s system will query the EPREL database and automatically pull in the official energy efficiency label and product sheet to display on your listing.
  • Provide EPREL through M2E Pro. Support for energy efficiency label attributes (including EPREL) is already built into the extension in M2E Pro. This means you can manage the new EPREL requirement directly from your Magento backend via M2E Pro, just as you would any other item-specific or listing attribute. In practical terms, M2E Pro exposes the “EPREL Registration Number” as a field in the eBay listing specifics for categories that require energy labels.

For sellers, the EPREL route is often easier and ensures accuracy. The EPREL number can usually be found by scanning the QR code on the product’s physical energy label or by searching the EPREL database using the product’s GTIN/EAN.

Technical Requirements for the EPREL Number Field

It’s important to input the EPREL code in the correct format to avoid errors. Here are the key technical requirements and validations for the EPREL Registration Number field on eBay:

  • Uniqueness. Each product model has its own EPREL number. You should use the specific number for the exact model you are selling. (For multi-variation listings, each variant might technically have its own EPREL if they are different models – eBay can handle this if the variations are truly separate products, but typically variations like colour won’t change the EPREL since the model is the same. In cases where variations have different energy profiles, consider listing them separately as the eBay energy label display can only show one set of data per listing.)
  • Numeric String. The EPREL number should consist only of digits (0–9). No letters, spaces, or special characters are allowed. For example, 1234567890123456789 is valid, but EPREL-12345 or 12345 678 would be rejected.
  • Length Limit. The maximum length is 19 digits. Most EPREL IDs will be shorter than this, but ensure you don’t pad it with any extra digits. If the number you got from the EPREL database is, say, 10 digits, just use those 10 digits. Do not include any formatting like commas or periods.
  • Validation. eBay’s API will validate the EPREL aspect on listing submission. If the value doesn’t meet the criteria above, eBay returns an error. For instance, if you accidentally include a letter or too many digits, eBay will reject the listing revise with an error message.

Step-by-Step Guide: Adding the EPREL Number via M2E Pro

For Active Products:

  • Go to eBay > Configuration > Categories
  • Open the category assigned to your product
  • In Item Specifics, set EPREL Registration Number
  • Save the changes
  • Make sure your Revise Rules are configured, and the Categories/Specifics option is enabled.

For New Products:

When assigning an eBay category during listing creation, open Item Specifics and choose how to provide EPREL:

  • Pull EPREL from a Magento attribute
  • Or enter the EPREL number manually

That’s it – by adding the EPREL number through M2E Pro, you’ve made your listing compliant. M2E Pro handles the submission of that data to eBay, and eBay, in turn, displays the standardised info to shoppers.

Summary

eBay’s new energy efficiency labelling requirements are now a crucial part of selling certain products in Europe. The addition of the EPREL registration number allows sellers to comply with these regulations in a simpler way: by providing a numeric product ID that unlocks the official energy label and info sheet on the eBay listing.

By following the step-by-step guide above, you can update your listings to include EPREL in just a few minutes, ensuring that your buyers see the standardized A–G energy labels and you remain compliant with EU law. M2E Pro supports EPREL as an eBay item-specific, so you can manage it from Magento by mapping a product attribute or entering the value manually, then revising the listing. Keep marketplace data updated, and use the correct category.
