Amazon's Big Update on Product Variation Reviews: What Sellers Need to Know

Amazon has updated the rules around review sharing for product variations, and the impact on your star ratings and review counts could be significant. If you sell products with multiple variations, you need to understand what’s coming and how to prepare your listings.

In this post, we will break down the changes, the types of Amazon variations that are affected, and how M2E Pro helps manage your product variations.

What’s changing?

Amazon has always grouped reviews across all variations of a product together, even when those variations have little in common. A customer buying a 700W microwave could be reading reviews left for a 1200W model, even though the two perform differently.

From February 2026, Amazon is changing this. Variations that differ in ways that have no real impact on product performance or function can still share reviews. Variations that differ significantly, such as in specs, materials, functions, or intended use, will no longer share reviews and will need to build their own. For some listings, this could mean a noticeable drop in star ratings or review count.

Amazon rolls out the change in stages, moving through product categories between February 12 and May 31, 2026. Amazon will email you at least 30 days before it affects your listings. But it’s still worth getting ahead of the change now.

Which variations still share reviews?

The good news is that many common variation types aren’t affected. Variations that are essentially the same product in a different form, like a different shade, size, or quantity, won’t be affected, and reviews will continue to be shared between them. Here are a few examples:

Which variations will not share reviews?

This is where sellers need to pay close attention. Variations that are different enough to affect how a customer uses or experiences the product will no longer have their reviews combined. It covers a wider range of variation types than you might expect:

How to prepare your Amazon listings with M2E Pro

The most important thing to do right now is review your variations and make sure they accurately reflect product differences. For example, color differences should be set up under a color variation, not a quantity variation. Getting this right before the change happens will help protect your ratings.

If you manage your Amazon listings through M2E Pro for Adobe Commerce (Magento), you can review and update your variations without leaving the platform. Click Manage Variations next to the variational product on the M2E Pro Listing page. From there, you can view and manage all individual variations and their details.

Using M2E Cloud for Shopify, BigCommerce, or another platform? Support for listing Amazon variational products is on its way.

If you update your variation themes once the change is live, eligible products will have their reviews re-shared without extra steps on your end. For more information on setting up product variations, view Amazon’s listing best practices and variation management pages.

Wrapping up

The sooner you review your listings, the better placed you will be when the change reaches your category. Check that your variations accurately reflect your products, watch for Amazon’s 30-day notification, and make all necessary updates before the change takes effect. Small adjustments now could make a real difference to your product ratings on Amazon.
